Aromatherapy For the Holidays
Summary
Aromatherapy can be a powerful and easy self-care tool to have on hand during this busy time. Inhaling essential oils is one of the quickest ways to reap their benefits.
When we inhale certain odor molecules, they attach to the receptor sites of the limbic system. The limbic system has been described as the emotional brain, and some of its job functions include maintaining heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance.
Our Wellness department offers a number of essential oils, as well as diffusing tools, and our staff members are happy to provide aromatherapy recommendations. Below are some of our top essential oil picks for the holiday season.
Anxiety
Cedarwood, Patchouli, Neroli, and Bergamot are soothing scents, and have been known to encourage feelings of stability and security.
Fatigue
Peppermint, Rosemary, and Sage are invigorating scents and can be used to stay alert during long drives and after-work parties.
Overstimulation
Rose, Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Sandalwood or Vetiver can provide a sense of calm without drowsiness, perfect for winding down after holiday events.
Sadness
Citrus oils have been shown to stimulate the production of serotonin, offering support for those struggling with sadness. Spearmint, Jasmine and Holy Basil have also been associated with a positive shift in mood.
Mindfulness & Focus
Myrrh can be helpful in uplifting mood and promoting a feeling of groundedness. Lemon Balm and Chamomile are commonly used in the practice of mindfulness.
Please use caution when using strong herbal remedies especially essential oils on sensitive skin.
